CHAPTER ELEVEN

Ealasaid

When I jerked awake, darkness surrounded me and I panicked. My breath came in shallow pants. “No, no, no,” I moaned, clenching my hands into fists. Lennox’s scent surrounded me and I feared for a moment that I was back in my frigid stone prison in Gralvein. My cloak brushed against my skin. No. I was clothed. Not warm, but not cold either. I was free.

“Mistress Brùn?”

Tavish stood in the doorway holding a candle. The flickering light cast his lined face in shadow.

“You were screaming, my lady. I feared the pain I would cause by waking you. Strange hands and all.”

He took one step closer. When I didn’t flinch, he took another. “May I?”

I nodded. He lowered himself down next to me with a grunt. The candle was placed in front of us. I spelled it, turning the flame from gold to blue.

“I do not wish to pry. But can I help?” Kindness softened his features. This man had risked himself for my safety. For Raven’s. He’d been used against us once and that betrayal had nearly gotten me shackled once more, but that was not his fault. I sucked in a breath and tried to calm myself.

“My apologies. I cannot stand the dark. Raven . . . he always spelled a candle to burn.” My eyes cradled tears.

“I will stay with you. Morning is not far off.” Silence pressed down on us as we watched the blue flame. “You were screaming for your mother,” he said quietly.

“Lennox killed my mother in this room. I keep seeing it. Every time I close my eyes.”

“By the Fates, my lady. Why then would you possibly sleep here?” Tavish tucked his hands under his armpits to ward off the chill.

“Because I had sixteen years of memories of her in this room. I have never set foot in his rooms. I was never allowed. I do not mean to start now. I will not give that bastard another moment of my conscious thoughts if I can avoid it. Unfortunately, he still haunts my nightmares. He likely always will.”

We stared into the flame again for several moments, unspeaking, until Tavish cleared his throat. “There has been no more from Mister Brùn?”

“No. And your formality must really cease. We have fought together and now we are on the run together. Ealasaid. Raven. Please.”

“Very well.” He rested his head back against the wall. “Wake me if you sense him.”

I hoped for another few hours of rest, but they did not come. When faint light seeped through the drafty walls of the hovel, I pushed up on an elbow. Tavish was slumped against the wall. I looked over at the shelf where we used to store our single change of clothing. My eyes narrowed. There was something carved into the wood. The letters were minuscule, hidden under where we’d always kept the stash of rags my mother used to clean.

I crawled forward, running my fingers over the carvings.

Below.

The single old language word was so out of place. Had Lennox ever discovered it, my mother would have been beaten terribly.
